The history of Dordrecht dates back to the 12th century, when the city was still known as "Thuredrech". In 1220, Dordrecht received city rights. During the Middle Ages, the city flourished as an important trading town and staple city, making it one of the six major cities of Holland. Although the city's importance later declined, its inner city still recalls this rich past.
