Nijmegen, also known as Nimwèège in Nijmeegs, Nimwegen in German, Noviomagus in Latin, Nimègue in French, and Nimega in Spanish and Italian, is a city and municipality in the province of Gelderland, the Netherlands, located close to the border with Germany. With 182,399 inhabitants (as of 31 January 2023), it is the largest municipality in Gelderland and ranks tenth among municipalities in the Netherlands by population.

The city is largely located on the southern bank of the river Waal, at the foot of a lateral moraine. After World War II, Nijmegen expanded to the south and west. Later, in the late 1990s, expansion followed to the north, across the river, known as the Waalsprong. This area between the already existing villages of Lent, Ressen and Oosterhout has seen a lot of new construction since the late 1990s.
