Terneuzen is a municipality in the Dutch province of Zeeland. As of 31 January 2023, the municipality had 54,990 inhabitants in the Zeeuws-Vlaanderen region, making it the largest municipality in Zeeland (source: CBS). The town hall is in the city of Terneuzen, with 25,405 inhabitants in 2021, making it the fourth largest city in Zeeland and also the largest town in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. The municipality was created in its current form on 1 January 2003, when the former municipalities of Axel and Sas van Gent were joined to Terneuzen.
The Ghent-Terneuzen Canal crosses the municipality and connects the city of Ghent in Belgium with the Western Scheldt. In March 2003, the fixed-river connection to the 'other side' was completed: the Westerschelde Tunnel. Access to this tunnel is right next to the canal.
