Enschede is a city and municipality in Twente, located in the east of the Dutch province of Overijssel.
In addition to the city of Enschede, the municipality of Enschede includes the villages of Lonneker, Boekelo, Usselo, Glanerbrug and the hamlet of Twekkelo. For addressing letters, all these places fall under the municipality of Enschede. The municipality has 161,194 inhabitants (31 January 2023, source: CBS) with around 160 nationalities. This makes Enschede the largest city in Overijssel and the fourteenth largest municipality in the Netherlands in terms of population.
From 1818, the original municipality of Enschede had a highly planned hexagonal shape, one of the most planned shapes in the Netherlands, and was completely surrounded by the municipality of Lonneker. The border was marked in 1826 by six numbered stone posts made of Bentheimer sandstone. Parts of Lonneker were annexed in 1884, and the rest of the municipality of Lonneker was also annexed in 1934.
The municipality of Enschede cooperates in the Twente Region and is one of the original participants of the EUREGIO, Europe's first regional cross-border cooperation association.
