Groningen (Gronings: Grunn, Grunnen or Stad, Frisian: Grins), is the capital of the Dutch province of Groningen and the largest nucleus in the municipality of the same name. In the province of Groningen and parts of Drenthe, the place is referred to as Stad for short. In 2021, the city of Groningen had 202,900 inhabitants, making it the largest city in the northern Netherlands.

Groningen grew from a municipality of 23,000 inhabitants in 1795 to one of around 100,000 in 1930. There was fighting in Groningen during the end of World War II, and much of the city centre went up in flames when it was liberated in 1945. Groningen is a city of varied commerce and industry, as well as a vibrant student city with over 60,000 students, nearly 35,000 of whom live in the city (2018).
