Hilversum is a town and municipality located in the Dutch province of North Holland, and also the largest town in the Gooi region of the country. The city is home to numerous national broadcasting companies and is known as the 'media city'. 'Hilversum' also refers to broadcasting activities.

The municipality of Hilversum has 93,396 inhabitants (31 January 2023, source: CBS) in an area of 46.19 km², of which 0.21 km² is water. After initially booming growth, the population fell sharply in the second half of the 20th century, from 100,000 in 1958 to less than 80,000 in 1999 (source: CBS). The municipality is known both as a 'garden city' because of its green surroundings, which are part of the Goois Nature Reserve and the wider Green Heart, and as a 'villa village' because of the relatively large number of villas.
