Rotterdam is a port city in the west of the Netherlands, located in the province of South Holland. With 588,490 inhabitants (on 1 January 2021), it is the second largest city in the Netherlands by population, after Amsterdam. The entire municipality of Rotterdam has a population of 664,311 and the even larger metropolitan region of Rotterdam The Hague has more than 2.4 million inhabitants.

The city gets its name from a dam in the river Rotte. Rotterdam lies on the river Nieuwe Maas, fed by water from the Rhine. The port of Rotterdam was for a long time the largest in the world and remains the largest and most important port in Europe. The port area stretches for 40 kilometres[2] and is a crucial logistical and economic centre. The city is known as a working-class city, partly because of its port industry, and has a very diverse population.
