Zaandam, a city in the province of North Holland, was formerly an independent municipality. On 1 January 2021, the town had a population of 78,705. It is the largest place in the municipality of Zaanstad in terms of population, while Assendelft has the largest area.

Located on both sides of the Zaan, Zaandam is characterised by two parallel dykes: the East side and the West side. Later, cross paths were built, resulting in mills scattered around the area. Some forming of the centre took place, especially near the Oostzijderkerk. In the 19th century, further development of the centre took place along the Gedempte Gracht and some parallel streets. The centre has now acquired a clear structure thanks to the Inverdan plan, a project that renewed and revamped the centre and the station area.
